Workers with Bulgaria’s VMZ-Sopot military plant are readying to continue their protest on Monday, January 14, the trade unions announced. VMZ workers will gather in front of company’s management office at 8:10 a.m. to stage their latest protest.

Bulgaria’s Privatisation Agency extended the deadline for the candidates to file an offer until 3 p.m. today. The sole company interested in the privatisation - Emko EOOD, did not file an offer on Friday, as initially announced. Earlier company’s owner, Emiliyan Gebrev, met with the management of the two trade unions at VMZ, to explain that there is a need to sack 1,800 people from the company now employing 3,200 workers.

Dimitar Atanasov with the Podkrepa Labour Confederation said that the possible investor wanted to change the entire strategy, which does not meet with trade union’s approval.
