Sozopol is a town with many interesting places and cultural monuments, dated back to ancient and more recent times. One of them is the amazing Church of the Holy Virgin, which is located in the old part of the town and is a very popular destination among tourists.
It was built back in XVII century and has been put in the registers of UNESCO among the important and precious monuments of world culture.
The church was built half-buried in the earth so as not to offend the ruling Ottomans, who banned Bulgarians from building tall structures. It is remarkable for its iconostasis and fine woodcarving made by local masters. Two of the icons in the church prove of the greatest interest: "Jesus Christ" and "Holy Virgin".
