Bourgas Regional Governor Konstantin Grebenarov issued an order imposing a ban on the use of the Vromos Beach, the Regional Governor`s press service said on Tuesday.

The beach is located between the municipalities of Sozopol and Bourgas and is close to the Rossen mining village. The problem emerged several decades ago and was caused by radioactive waste waters from the tailings pond of the Rossen mines. A new tailings pond was built, however, in 1989 with financing under the PHARE programme. According to a recent assessment of the National Centre of Radiobiology and Radiation Protection, the sea water quality meets the established standards.

Yet, the Environment Executive Agency has established that radiation over the beach line exceeds up to two-fold permissible levels. Based on this fact the competent institutions have come up with a stand that the usage of the Vromos beach poses threat to human health as the average radiation does not comply with the radiological safety criteria, applied by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Warning signs have been placed with the assistance of the Civil Defence Service. Letters have been sent to the mayors of Sozopol and Burgas to notify the interested parties, Grebenarov said.
