The Botanical Garden in Balchik was transferred to the Ministry of Culture by a Government decision yesterday.

"The estate covering 183,488 sq m is located in the Palace area and has a status of immovable cultural asset of national importance. Transferring the Botanical Garden to the Ministry of Cultural will create the necessary conditions for its development and will turn it into a cultural centre of international significance," read a release of the Government`s press office.

Sofia University which owned 74 dca until now will be left with 11 dca including a farm yard and a nursery. The decision was made by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Rosen Plevneliev, and Minister of Culture, Vezhdi Rashidov. It is almost the same as the decision made by former PM Stanishev`s cabinet in 2007 when the management of the entire park of the palace complex was transferred to the Ministry of Culture and only the above-mentioned 11 dca remained for Sofia University.

The decision of 2007 was appealed and in April 2009 the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) revoked it, ruling that the cabinet did not have legal grounds to deprive Sofia University of the estate.

Over the last eight years, the institution has invested more than BGN 2 mln in reconstruction and repairs of buildings and equipment in the complex, in the construction of new sewers for waste water and of a drainage system.
