Water level in flooded areas in the Northwestern town of Bregovo dropped 20 cm overnight after an opening was made Monday in the dyke along the bank of the Timok River, Bregovo Mayor Milcho Lalov told BTA on Tuesday.

The opening was cut Monday after water between the outer and the inner dykes reached critical level, threatening to flood the town.

The flooded houses that are nearest to the dyke will begin to be drained today. Volunteers will use rubble and sand to reinforce the leak in the dyke which appeared two days ago, Lalov said.
