The Thracian city of Perperikon has already become a trademark in cultural tourism, which suffered no lack interest due to the global economic crisis.
"Over 200,000 people have visited the rock complex in 2009, as in August alone their number was twenty thousand. Tour operators organize excursions for foreign tourists, who are on vacation at the Black Sea resorts," announced Bulgarian archaeologist professor Nikolay Ovcharov.
Under PHARE programme have been allotted 2,6 million euro for the restoration and the conservation of Perperikon. If archaeologists manage to absorb the funds properly, in five years will be restored the ancient acropolis in the complex, Nikolay Ovcharov thinks.
The unearthing performed this summer proved conclusively that Perperikon was the center of the so-called `fire cult` typical for the Crete - Mycenae civilization. According to prof. Ovcharov the cult penetrated in the lands of Thrace most probably through Samothraki Island, ruled at that time by the kings of Crete.
