Sofia will mark the 100th anniversary of its central synagogue`s consecration with an official ceremony, exhibitions, concerts and a round table 6-11 September. The celebration has been organized by Shalom, the organization of the Jews in Bulgaria, and is under the patronage of Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.
In the European family there is nobody more tolerant than the Bulgarian community, as far as ethnicity and religions are concerned, Maxim Benvenisti, Chair of Shalom, said.
The synagogue`s anniversary is a good occasion to remind the world of this quality and advantage of the Bulgarian society, Mr Benvenisti added. Sofia` central synagogue is the biggest in the Balkans and third biggest in Europe after the synagogues in Budapest and Amsterdam.
