An antique fortress near the famous Belogradchik rocks, Bulgaira’s natural phenomenon bidding for one of the new world’s seven wonders, will be excavated for the first time. The fortress is located on the Zaech peak close to the village of Krachimir, said Sara Tatarova, archaeologist of the local museum of history.

The fortified settlement dates back to the 4-6th century B.C. Some 50 years ago, eminent architect Ivan Balkanski showed vivid interest in its research. An amateur historian gave him a carved stone slate featuring Thracian god Hermes that was discovered in the vicinity of the fortress.

A stone relief of a horseman is one of a kind in this part of Bulgaria. It is exhibited in the museum of history in the town of Belgradchik. Another interesting find discovered in the fortress is a unique late Iron Age sword. Archeologists also came across many fragments of Thracian ceramics.

The project will be funded by the Museum of History in Belogradchik.
