The village of Matochina is located some 10 km east of the village of Sladun and about 40 km east-northeast of the town of Svilengrad, on the right shore of the Tundja river. It is situated in direct proximity to the boundary between Bulgaria and Turkey.

Only the citadel (internal fortress) has been preserved until today. Its walls go up to 18 m above the earth and are an impressive view. Insignificant traces of the external wall have remained. The remains, that could still be seen today, are dated back to XII – XVI century.

According to some specialists, the famous Bukelon fortress, which is related to the legendary battle between the Romans and the Goths near Adrianopol, in which the Romans were defeated, was located here.
