A unique sanctuary dating back to 4,500 year BC was unearthed during excavations at the Kaleto locality near Mezdra (north-western Bulgaria). The find, which is unprecedented in Bulgaria, was discovered by archaeologist Georgy Ganetzovski from the Museum of History in Vratsa.
This sanctuary could be compared with Perperikon or Catal Huyuk in Asia Minor. The archaeologist has unearthed two amazingly well-preserved bulls` heads - their horns are one meter long and were arranged as a bow symbolically orientated from north to south. "This means that this was a sanctuary - the earliest unearthed by now in Bulgaria," the archaeologist explained.
According to him, the sanctuary is dedicated to the Goddess-Mother as the bull is the universal symbol of virility. The presence of this animal in the sanctuary symbolizes the unity between the male and female aspects in the ancient religions.
