The phenomenal natural stone landmark "Chudnite Mostove" (The Amazing Bridges) is covered with the signatures of famous Bulgarian and Foreign personalities.
The landmark is under the jurisdiction of the village of Zaburdo. Its mayor, Valentin Cherpokov has received a citation by the Regional Environmental Inspection Agency in Smolyan since the writings have been considered as an act of vandalism. The stone landmark is a protected natural site.
The Regional Inspection has taken the task to remove the signatures. The mayor had stated that he is not aware of the citation and that he really is not concerned with it.
"I suppose that this an attack on my personality arising from my proposal to terminate the contract of the "Eco Tour" company, currently collecting the BGN 2 entrance fee for the site", Cherpokov had said, adding that the company "collects BGN 2000 a day from the fees without even picking up a single piece of paper from the ground".
The mayor accused the Regional Inspection Agency of wasted their time with nonsense but not paying any attention to his signals about the trash being damped illegally at the landmark site by the nearby cabins.
The tradition to leave signatures on the stones dates from decades, according to Cherpokov. He has pointed out that the rocks bear the signatures of former Communist and State leaders such Todor Zhivko and Pencho Kubadinski or the former US Ambassador in Bulgaria Avis Bowlen. The last signature there belongs to the internationally known football player and coach Hristo Stoychkov.
