To the disappointment of all those, who were prepared to see the authentic treasure of Panagyurishte at Plovdiv International Fair, it emerged that a replica would be displayed.
Bozhidar Dimitrov, director of the Bulgarian History Museum, assured that the original 23-carat gold treasure would remain at the museum. Neither will it be transported to Spain for the exhibition this fall. Dimitrov understands that PIF is an important exhibition but emphasizes that this should not be at the expense of the visitors of the museum.
The original treasure of Panaguyishte consists of 9 different gold dishes, weighing a total of 6.164 kg. The objects are made of 23-carat gold and date from antiquity. They were owned by an unnamed Thracian ruler according to archaeologists. The treasure was discovered on December 8, 1949 by three brothers, who were digging for clay. They worked at a ceramics factory in the Bulgarian town of Panagyurishte. The treasure has been displayed in more than 40 countries worldwide.
