The crisis did not spare the kids. The number of abandoned young Bulgarians has increased as a result of the parents` financial problems, it emerged at a seminar of the Bulgarian Ministry of Social Policy and Labour, held in Hissar, southern Bulgaria.

Over thirty kids were abandoned only in December 2008, most of them in the regions of Pernik and Sofia. "The reason is that these regions are best developed economically, which explains higher birth rates.  The abandoned kids age from a couple of days to three year olds," explained Hristo Manov, deputy chair of the Child Protection Agency.

Expert teams of psychologist talk to every mother at risk in the maternity hospital. In most of the cases the abandoned kids are Romani but the crisis resulted in a number of Bulgarian children left in the street.

Bulgaria`s Social Minister, Emilia Maslarova appealed that the Parliament should pass the Family Code as soon as possible. Thus the stay of infants in orphanages would be reduced to six months and then they may be adopted.
