Mayors of 13 municipalities and Environment Minister Dzhevdet Chakarov put pen to paper on the first batch of contracts under the EU’s Environment Operational Programme. The local governments will spend BGN 243 million of EU aid on sewerage networks, waste treatment plants and collectors, and technical support with waste management projects due to be completed in three years. Two of the projects need approval by the European Commission because of big price tags. Vratsa, northeastern Bulgaria, is asking for BGN 140 million to build water mains to stop water rationing.
