15 Bulgarian tourists from Pirdop, Chelopech and Anton, drowned in the lake of Ohrid

"The bolt jolted abruptly and we all fell overboard. Few of us could swim. Those who could not grabbed whatever they could reach pieces of wood, fragments of the ship`s body, everything that could float. Many of those in the water were screaming in terror," Ivan, one of the survivors on the sunken Ilindem boat, told.

Fifteen Bulgarian tourists drowned in the lake of Ohrid on Saturday after their boat suddenly split apart and sunk. The accident occurred at 12 pm Bulgarian time. A group of Bulgarian tourists boarded Ilinden and set sail to the St. Naum monastery. Some 200-300 m off shore the boat suddenly keeled over to the right and overturned.

"The tragedy unfolded in a matter of seconds. We were laughing and the next minute we were in the water. I am not a swimmer so I clung to the rails," Ivan said further.

"The boat sunk in fifteen minutes,"onlookers told the Standart.
Two tourist boats first arrived on the scene to help, followed by the motorboats of some campers, who spotted the sinking vessel from the shore.

The 55 Bulgarian tourists onboard Ilinden were from the town of Pirdop and the villages of Chelopech and Anton.

Macedonian police authorities said there were 73 passengers onboard Ilinden and the vessel`s capacity was 45 passengers.

In response to the tragic accident, Bulgaria`s PM Boyko Borisov sent the government airplane to Ohrid to take the survivors back home...
