Simitli. An earthquake measuring around 3 on the Richter scale has been registered in the southwestern Bulgarian municipality of Simitli, Seismological Institute at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences informed. The tremor was recorded at 1:49pm local time. No injured people and damage have been reported so far.

A project for the setting up of a ski center in the Razlog valley was deposited to Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, Strouma daily reported. Nearly 240 million euro will be invested in the Pirin Mountain resort over the coming three years. The first work meeting was held in Blagoevgrad on the occasion of the organization of a round of the competitions for the European Rafting Cup which will be carried out in Kresna gorge, Mayor of Simitli Apostol Apostolov said for Radio FOCUS – Pirin. The Municipality of Simitli is organizer of the event. European Rafting Cup Simitli 2008 will be under the patronage of regional governor Vladimir Dimitrov. The competitions will be between 30 May and 1 June while the number of participants will be around 400, the Mayor of Simitli said. The gorge of Kresna was meeting all requirements for a rafting competition of this rank. He expressed his satisfaction with the fact that the International Rafting Federation had evaluated the nature of the region.

The faces of three Bulgarian presidents are to be hewn into rocks near the town of Simitli, Mayor Apostol Apostolov announced Thursday. The first head of state elected in a democratic vote Zhelyu Zhelev will be among those, whose images are to be perpetuated in the framework of the new initiative. Petar Stoyanov, who ruled Bulgaria in the period 1997-2002 and the current President Georgi Parvanov are the other two officials included in the initiative. Simitli`s mayor said the municipality relies on sponsors to finance the realization of the project.
