Ilinden border checkpoint will be granted a permit for use within two days. The construction of the border checkpoints has also been stopped by the European funds cancellation.

In 1995 Bulgaria and Greece have concluded an agreement for the border infrastructure according to which should be built or modernized five border points between the two countries and to build the access infrastructure between them. This means to restore five out of seven border points that were used by people in the period between the two wars of last century and also to adapt them to the modern flow of cars and tourists. Thirteen years later there are two more border points - Kapitan Petko Voyvoda and Ilinden.

Ilinden border checkpoints was designed as an exterior border checkpoint for the European Union and for this reason its planned capacity is 80 persons per shift, but currently there are hardly 10 persons working.

In conformity with the bilateral agreement two more border checkpoints are to start operation - Eledzhe and Makaza. The Bulgarian government plans to propose an agreement for border checkpoints at Avren - Organi, Zlatograd - Termes and Gorna Arda - Paranesti.
