Vihren is situated in the northern part of the Pirin mountain, between the deep valleys of Banderitza and the Vlahinska river.

It is the most majestic summit in the Pirin mountain. Its height is 2914 m, making it the second highest peak in Bulgaria after Musala, and the fourth highest on the Balkan peninsula.

According to the ancient mythology, the supreme Slavonic god of Perun lived here.

Vihren is notable for its distinct alpine character, its sharp and unscalable tops, rock ridges, beautiful circus lakes, rock shoots, and moraines. Its alpine look is a result of the mountain icing, which happened after the Ice age.
