US energy giant AES is going to launch its Bulgarian thermal power plant AES Galabovo by the end of April, after a delay of several months, but only with a part of its total capacity. AES-Bulgaria made the decision to change the name of the thermal power plant (TPP) AES Maritsa Iztok-1 to AES Galabovo, which is expected to be ready in the second half of 2010. AES is working on two big projects in Bulgaria, the new Galabovo TPP and a wind farm on the Black sea. The American company is carrying out the biggest foreign investment in the country amounting to EUR 1.5 billion.

Accidents: Air of Gulobovo polluted again with sulphur dioxide

The air in the southern town of Galabovo has been polluted with sulphur dioxide, Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate – Stara Zagora announced. At 10:00 a.m. on Thursday the equipment measured 662.5 micrograms of sulphur dioxide per cubic meter. The Inspectorate has recommended that thermal power plants in Maritsa East complex reduce the loading of units working without sulphur purification installations.

Bulgarian Supreme Cassation Prosecutor`s Office has ordered instituting legal procedures against unknown perpetrator over the regular sulphur dioxide pollution in the town of Galabovo. The announcement was made by the national movement "Ekoglastnost" that has previously tried twice to bring the case to court but all the claims were rejected. The legal procedures are to be launched after the activists informed European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Bulgaria`s Chief prosecutor Boris Velchev in letters, sent on April 1, 2007...

Bulgaria`s executive environmental agency has raised Friday a second alert in eight days over high concentration of sulphur dioxide in the air over the central Bulgarian town of Galabovo. The pollution monitoring system in the town detected levels of the chemical substance considerably exceeding the threshold allowed. The output of the two nearby power stations and the power distribution factory is the reason for the pollution again, local environmental authorities commented. The operators in the thermal power plant complex Maritza -Iztok have already been ordered to reduce the power and to use coal with lower sulphur content. Galabovo citizens report that toxic pollution high above legal levels is often detected in the smog-covered town.

A complete solution to the pollution problem of the town of Galabovo is the construction of sulfur-purifying installations, the Bulgarian Minister of Environment and Waters Dzhevded Chakarov said in the Bulgarian Parliament. According to Chakarov the Maritza Iztok Thermal Electric Plant in Bulgaria was supposed to be equipped with such installations by June 30 2007 for units 1 and 2 and will have to build such for units 3 and 4 by August 2008, but the second two will also be late.[1] [2]
