Bulgarian Supreme Cassation Prosecutor`s Office has ordered instituting legal procedures against unknown perpetrator over the regular sulphur dioxide pollution in the town of Galabovo. The announcement was made by the national movement "Ekoglastnost" that has previously tried twice to bring the case to court but all the claims were rejected. Bulgaria`s executive environmental agency has raised Friday a second alert in eight days over high concentration of sulphur dioxide in the air over the central Bulgarian town of Galabovo. The pollution monitoring system in the town detected levels of the chemical substance considerably exceeding the threshold allowed. The output of the two nearby power stations and the power distribution factory is the reason for the pollution again, local environmental authorities commented. The operators in the thermal power plant complex Maritza -Iztok have already been ordered to reduce the power and to use coal with lower sulphur content. Galabovo citizens report that toxic pollution high above legal levels is often detected in the smog-covered town. |

| Stara Zagoras Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters RIEW has fined each of the three thermal power plants TPPs in the Maritsa East complex with 120 000 leva for pollution, the highest amount it is allowed to impose. The fines were imposed after the TPPs dumped too much sulphur dioxide, exceeding the maximum allowed quantity in the air over the town of Gulubovo ninefold on Febrary 67 2008, Penka Nacheva, head of RIEW Stara Zagora, said. |

| A complete solution to the pollution problem of the town of Galabovo is the construction of sulfur-purifying installations, the Bulgarian Minister of Environment and Waters Dzhevded Chakarov said in the Bulgarian Parliament. According to Chakarov the Maritza Iztok Thermal Electric Plant in Bulgaria was supposed to be equipped with such installations by June 30 2007 for units 1 and 2 and will have to build such for units 3 and 4 by August 2008, but the second two will also be late. |
