The Kastrakli natural reserve is situated in the Rhodopi mountain, on the territory of Borino municipality. It occupies an area of 124 hectares and was established for the purpose of preserving the century-old pine forest, the unique rock formations and typical scenery.

An artificial lake has been built in the reserve. It is situated in a high-mountain valley. The natural relief has been used as a wall.

According to scientists, the Kastrakli region is the second place on the Planet, where over the period May-June-July, the biggest concentration of more than half of the butterflies living on Earth, could be seen.
