An Interview with Vetko Arabadzhiev
Plovdiv businessman Vetko Arabadzhiev is the president of Victoria Group and chairman of Union of Investors in Tourism. His investments in the branch exceed 300 million euro. Has Bulgaria solved part of the problems in tourism, is tourist season 2008 facing a failure and if there is a remedy for Bulgaria`s seaside resorts - these are some of the questions before Vetkov Arabadzhiev
- Mr. Arabadzhiev, the summer tourist season started a month ago. What do you expect at the end of the season - celebrating good results with Champaign or tears?
- We expect better results than in 2007. If you offer good quality service at attractive prices you will celebrate with champaign.
- Which country has the biggest number of holiday-makers in Bulgaria this summer?
- This year the biggest number of tourists come from Russia and Germany, but the forecasts show that the number of Swedish tourists will drop down by 50%.
- What is the reason for that?
- Because a Swedish tourist was killed last summer in a discotheque in Nessebar. Swedish tourists are probably the most demanding as regards security in the world and such an incident shocks them immensely. Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland are the main market for Bulgarian tourist agencies. The concern is not just for this summer season - the drop might turn into a negative tendency for the next couple of years. We should not let that happen. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Milen Keremedchiev, who takes to heart the problems of Bulgarian tourism responded immediately and said that he would instruct the ambassadors and the economic counselors of Bulgaria`s embassies to Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and Helsinki to meet with representatives of the tourist agencies and the media to guarantee that Bulgaria takes serious steps regarding personal security. Bulgaria cannot lose one of the main tourist markets. Tourism Investors` union will invite Swedish journalist to visit Bulgaria.
- Why did you ask for an urgent meeting with Minister of Interior Mihail Mikov?
- To discuss the setting up of a tourist police force, which will maintain order and security in the resort areas; to introduce CCTV systems in the resort areas. After we sent our letter to the Minister of Interior, and it has obviously been taken into very careful consideration, 750 police officers were commissioned to the seaside.
Minister Mihail Mikov has initiated the formation of an inter-institutional group, which will be responsible for the safety and security of the tourists in the summer season.
I hope people will understand that such problems are not working against the interest of tourist business alone. They mar the image of Bulgaria as a whole and this way both the international tourists and the international business adopt a negative attitude towards Bulgaria. The safety of the tourists is everything for tourism. It doesn`t matter that Bulgaria has beautiful nature, fancy hotels and restaurants, great beaches, ski resorts or historical sites. If the tourists don`t feel safe, things simply wouldn`t work. And no ad slogans would make them work. That`s the truth. Therefore we appeal to the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the State Agency for Tourism, all business associations in the tourism sector, to do everything they can to coax the Scandinavian tourists into coming back for a holiday in Bulgaria next year. Because this season, the state will lose 400 million euro only from the reflux of Scandinavian tourists.
