The aftermath of the world economic crisis can be seen in the people`s daily life. This year the traditional open-air brides fair near Bachkovo Monastery, southeastern Bulgaria was different.
Every year on Gypsy Holy Virgin, as the Assumption of Virgin Mary, celebrated according to the Julian calendar is called, dozens of Roma families gather on the meadows near the monastery to trade their daughters.
This year, though, virgin girls were sold very cheap. Depending on their looks and posture girls were traded from 500 to 1000 levs. Those who have lost their virginity were offered for only 200 or 300 levs. Dozens of brides between 14 and 18 years of age were brought to the meadows near the monastery yesterday. Some of them were already arranged in a marriage and said they had come at the festival for the fun and because it was where the exchange of money and girls was made.
The organizers of the gathering roasted three lambs to feed the participants. Last year the lambs were 14.
