More than 700 people in the southern region of Pazardjik will lose their job in April and May. The statistics cover only companies planning massive lay-offs that have to be reported to the labour offices. The global financial meltdown will cut 300 jobs from the railway carriage repair plant in the town of Septemvri from March 25 to April 30.

Back in February open pit copper miner Asarel Medet announced it will slash 193 jobs by May 20. Rubber products maker Kauchuk plans to lay off 160 workers from April to May.

In April metal constructions manufacturer Herkal will dismiss 40 of its staff. Actual redundancies will be much more numerous as companies that fire one or two workers do not report to the authorities, said Vasil Mezov, head of the local labour inspectorate.
