The Bulgarian Orthodox Church canonised yesterday the martyrs from Batak and Novo Selo, massacred by the bashi-bazouk troops led by Ahmed Agha after the failed April Uprising of 1876 against the Turkish oppressors. The people slaughtered in Batak will be honoured by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church on May 17 and the day will be called Convocation of the Batak martyrs. The church-charnel house St. Nedelya in Batak (West Rhodope Mountain) is a national historical monument of culture. It was built in 1813 by the local people for only 75 days. Weather conditions in mountains are not suitable for skiing , press centre of the Mountain Rescue Service with the Bulgarian Red Cross said. The Mountain Rescue Service warns that visibility is reduced due to the snow cover which worsens conditions for skiing. It is snowing in mountain resorts of Bansko and Pamporovo and on Vitosha and Stara Planina mountains. Weather in mountains is overcast and calm. Measured temperatures vary from -7 and -5 degrees Celsius.

Weather conditions in the high parts of the mountains-over 2000 m, are not suitable for tourism, Mountain Rescue Service at Bulgarian Red Cross anounced. It is not snowing. Students, who have chosen to celebrate Stident`s Day (December 8) in the mountain, should be careful. The weather conditions are suitable for mountain tourism, Mountain Rescue Service at Bulgarian Red Cross informed. Later today a break in the weather is expected. The Mountain Rescue Service recommends that tourists choose shorter routes, on low grounds so that they are able to get back home early in the afternoon.

The Bulgarian town of Batak is working on project targeting the transformation of an old partisan camp into a tourist attraction, radio Focus- Pazardzhik reported. Most of the partisan dug-outs are still preserved and numerous town visitors are showing interest in these.
