Bulgaria has set a goal of 10% electricity from renewable energy sources in 2010 and 16% in 2020. The figure for 2008 is 7%, only 4% is from wind farms, the rest is from hydropower plants. Currently only 36% of the hydro potential of the country is used in 26 big power stations over 10 MW.

Tsankov Kamad hydropower plant on Vacha river is under construction, the National Electricity company started rehabilitation of the third HPP of Dolna Arda cascade, the project is to be completed in 2010, it will have a total capacity of 331 MW. There are two hydropower projects on the Danube under discussion - one between Nikopol and Turnu Magurele, the other - between Silistra and Kalarash, the ideas are not new.

According to 2002 estimates of both governments the cost will be around EUR 4.2bn for the complexes and the relevant railway and road infrastructure. The European Investment Bank is interested in the projects as the river is important for the Trans-European Corridor 7.

Within a month is to be signed the agreement between the national electric company NEC and the Austrian consortium EVN Alpine for Gorna Arda complex, there is already an agreement with the Turkish Ceylan holding. Three dams are expected to be built - Madan, Ardino and Sarnitsa, of a total installed capacity of 178 MW.
