Leading Bulgarian archaeologist Prof Nikolay Ovcharov unearthed an ancient still in the Orphean sanctuary, near the village of Tatul , southeastern Bulgaria. The still dates back to the 12th century AD when there was a mansion of a Byzantine aristocrat on this site. At the time such vessels, called `alembik` were used for distilling. The village of Tatul (15 km. northwest of town of Momchilgrad ) – a lot of houses scattered among the rocky place, stone formations around them, and no sign that give a hint of the proximity of one of the most interesting ancient Thracian monuments in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian village of Tatul , located in Momchilgrad Municipality , received 300 000 euro from the PHARE programme for the restoration of a Thracian rock sanctuary.
Tatul deputy mayor Sevdalin Ognyanov said that the project dates back eight years and was finally nearing completion.
Work on the project named Tatul : Orpheus Sanctuary will start in May, 2007, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
Tourists will have the opportunity to use the services of trained tourist guides at the site.
