Health Minister guest at ceremony of year opening in Varna Medical University

Varna: As the new academic year opened at the Varna Medical University, one of the official guests at the ceremony, Deputy Health Minister Velerii Mitrev, warned of a serious understaffing facing the national health system some 3-5 years from now.

The Ministry has asked the regional health care centres to prepare forecasts for the needs of medical professionals in the coming years.

Mitrev said that even now medical establishments are experiencing a shortage of both doctors and nurses but the situation is sure to aggravate.

Bulgaria has a total of 32,000 registered doctors which makes a ratio of 1 doctor per 28,000 population and is up to the EU standards but it has a problem with an uneven distribution of medical professionals across the territory of the country, Dr. Didmiter Lenkov, chief secretary at the Bulgarian Medical Association, told BTA. Doctors are concentrated in the large cities leaving remote areas severely understaffed.

The shortage of doctors is worsts among anesthetists, pathologists and virologists, with pediatricians expected to be next, Dr. Lenkov said...
