The epicentre of the quake was registered 200 kilometres northeast of the capital Sofia. It struck at 7.29 am. "The quake and the information blackout caused panic among the people of Strazhitsa, who fled into the streets," mayor Stefan Stefanov told the Bulgarian News Agency. No damages or casualties were immediately reported. In December 1986 a devastating earthquake hit the area of Strazhitsa municipality, killing two people and destroying thousands of buildings.
