Traces of the pre-historic man`s presence (late Paleolithic age - 40 000-14 000 B.C.) were discovered on the municipality`s territory .
In the regions of the volcanic formations (the hills by the villages of Varbovka and Boutovo ), west of Pavlikeni , several ceramic centres came into existence during the Thracian-Roman period. The unique for the Balkan Peninsula antique ceramic centre, which existed from c.3 to c.5 A.D., is situated 4 km to the west of Pavlikeni .
