History Museum - Pavlikeni

The History Museum of Pavlikeni was founded in September 1978. It has been keeping, popularizing, studying, and preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Pavlikeni and the towns and villages in the region. It is housed in a detached two-floor building designed by the architect T. Teofilov. Above the entrance of the museum, a monumental ceramic picture which is made by the artist Gr. Spiridonov and the sculptor Prof. G. Chapkanov is assembled. The Eternal Calendar created after the idea of Father M.Preobrazenski in 1870 is a unique exhibit from the Renaissance period, and it has been kept in the exhibition of the museum.

The guests of the museum can visit the Antic Ceramics Centre, a large architectural complex 5 km westwards from Pavlikeni. It originated on an ancient Thracian dwelling. It has premises of different sizes and functions that are arranged around the inner courtyard with colonnades. There are also the heating equipment (hipokaust), Roman bath, preserved and exhibited glaze-kilns, and workshops for the production of ceramics for the daily life, building materials, and art ceramics. A great number of pottery such as ceramic lamps, terra cotta, children`s toys, bronze applications, rings, and bracelets were found in the complex.

Exhibitions Information:
On the first floor of the building there is an "Art Gallery," in which over 200 works of arts such as paintings, black-and-white drawings, and iconography are exhibited. On the second floor of the museum a General Historical Display is arranged, in which the history of Pavlikeni and the region is traced back in chronological order. The exhibited museum valuables are thematically arranged in the 4 sections:  "Archaeology",  "Renaissance",  "Ethnography", "Modern History".
