Elena section of the Balkan range – calm and beauty in the mountain folds Travel: Thursday, 2007-10-18 07:13 Article by: Veneta Nickolova - BNR
The town of Elena abounds in the breath of times long past. Walking though the old part of the town will take you over 150 years back. It holds small settlements and quarters hugging in the mountain greenery of the slopes of the Central Balkan Range. There are in the region numerous ruins of ancient and medieval fortresses. Today’s architectural look of the town dates to the Bulgarian Revival Period, (from mid -18th through 19th c.) One of the sights in Elena is the museum house of the fighter for the independence of the Bulgarian Church in the times of Ottoman rule – Ilarion Makariopolski. The building impresses with its broad verandas and large eaves. Another interesting place is the Church of the Assumption from the mid-19th century. It is a typical Bulgarian church with a nave and two aisles built on the remnants of a much older chapel. This is one of the large Orthodox temples in our lands. In its immediate proximity stands the Church of St. Nicolas, which is the oldest one in Elena. It dates back to the 15th century. At first sight it looks humble and unpretentious but its rich interior decoration made by local Elena painters is indeed astonishing. Small local cafes offer rest after the long walk and a beautiful view over the wavy slopes of the Mountain. This part of the Balkan Range is covered by deciduous forests inhabited by wild boar, deer, foxes and other animal species. The locality is often visited by hunting tourism fans. Close to the near-by village of Kapinovo stands one of the most significant cultural and historic monuments in the region. It is the Kapinovski Monastery built in the distant 1272. This holy place, which resembles from the outside a medieval fortress contains highly valuable frescoes and icons from the Revival period. A visitor to the region can also discover several settlements around Elena with well-preserved old houses dipped in abundant orchards and vineyards. Some of them climb up the slopes of the Mountain or line along the banks of the Yovkovtsi dam - a true paradise for anglers. One of the romantic villages of the Elena Balkan region is Valchovtsi. It stands less than a kilometer from the dam and far from noisy tourist centers. Similar to many places in the region it offers cozy family hotels. They are actually refurbished old houses, adapted for the needs of rural tourism and yards full of flowers. People prefer the village for its calm and authentic atmosphere, says Ganka Truhcheva, owner of a rural tourism complex built on the model of old farmhouses. “This is old Revival period architecture typical for its wooden siding and large stone base. These materials create a special atmosphere of coziness. That is why we have tried to preserve this old style combining it with modern accommodation facilities. Children form the cities find it very interesting here as they have nowhere else to see a duckling, a rabbit or caress a deer who is calmly walking and grazing in the yard.” If you decide to give in to rural life, you should by al means try local cuisine. Most dishes offered in the taverns here are made on old granny’s recipes. And don’t miss to try the “Elena fillet”. It is smoked pork meat rolled in a combination local mountain spices. Guests keen on hiking can chose among several eco-paths disclosing the unaffected beauty of the Balkan Range. There are also possibilities for the lately popular off road jeep rides to the most inaccessible places of the mountain. There, if you wish, you can practice what some call “primitive tourism”. “We have two houses to which there is no road at all, but they dispose of an electricity generator and heating,” Ivan Truhchev from the tourist business explains. “Guests leave their vehicles at the car park of the tourist center in Valchovtsi, they get on the jeeps and we take them up to the mountain where they can fully enjoy wild nature. At night one can hear the does call their young ones or wild bores entering the yard. Its wild and romantic!” Citizens of the capital Sofia and a growing number of foreign nationals enchanted with the beauty of the Elena Balkan region show an interest in buying old houses in the locality. In Valchovtsi, for example, there are two British families who have settled and continue to enjoy the environmentally friendly way life among the folds of the Mountain. Local people claim that almost all houses in the region are now bought off and believe that tourism there is yet to see its dawn.
