Sexaginta Prista fortress in Ruse

Sexaginta Prista means the port of sixty ships, and is a Roman fortress built on the territory of the nowadays town of Ruse. The Roman castle arose above the ruins of an ancient Thracian settlement. The Thracian pitcher found by the excavations and dated to 2nd-1st century BC evidences for the existence of the Thracain village here.

The first significant research of Sexaginta Prista was made by the Shkorpil brothers. The archeologists found a lot of remains of household pottery, transport means and other goods that proved the development of a vigorous growth. In 2006 the archeologists found the remains of a Roman military ship, probably used in the first quarter of 4th century to the first decade of the 5th century. The dating was made with the help of the coins and pottery found. 30 stairs leading to a fortified stone tunnel used in the ages of the Ottoman Empire were also found.

Sexaginta Prista shared the fate of the other forts on the right riverside of the Lower Danube. It died under the attacks of Avars and Slavs in the end of 6th and the beginning of 7th century. Later, in 9th-10th century the medieval settlement Ruse arose over its ruins.
