The Bulgarian government announced three new bids for exploration for oil and gas in the northern parts of the country. Bulgarian legislation has it that companies must compete to get a permit to either explore or produce underground natural resources. Of the three new territories open for prospecting, two are in the northeastern and one in the northwestern part of the country. One of Bulgaria`s most traveled roads - between the city of Ruse and the town of Byala is closed due to a fatal crash involving a car and a freight truck, the Head of Emergency Medical Services in Ruse reported for the Darik radio. The "Ford" automobile had hit an icy spot and spun around crashing with the freight truck despite the truck driver`s efforts to steer away. The male driver of the car had died on the spot.

Ruse based Ekon 91, the Bulgarian manufacturer of paint and varnish products, said all new offerings of the company will comply with relevant EU environment regulations on the interior use of paints and varnishes. The company has been certified under the ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:1999 standards by Swiss certifier SGS. Ekon was established in `91 as a construction materials company. It later diversified into resins, paints and varnishes. In `02, Ekon bought a foamlatex production unit in the city of Biala, in the Ruse region.

The regional prosecutor of Bulgaria`s town of Byala and an investigator have been severely injured in a heavy crash between two cars and a heavy-loaded truck near the Danube city of Ruse on Friday. The accident was caused by the driver of one of the cars, who veered into the opposite lane, hitting the vehicle the two magistrates were riding in. The car of the legal officials was then hit by a truck that did not manage to stop in time. The road between Ruse and Byala is temporarily closed as the traffic in the area has been redirected. The reasons for the accident are still under investigation.

Politics: Milk producers threaten to walk to Sofia together with animals

Milk producers from the regions of Ruse and Targovishte will unite their protests in the town of Byala, while the farmers from the regions of Pleven and Lovech will join their protests in the village of Obnova, Adrian Tsakovski with the National Association of Milk Producers in Bulgaria told Focus News Agency.
After the latest protests outside the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Supply on January 16th, Minister Nihat Kabil announced that BGN 21 million had been allotted to assist farmers under the EU’s de minimis regulation. According to Tsakovski the procedure of applying for funding would take too much time.
“Next week most probably we will walk to Sofia together with our animals,” he said.
